Today IBM announced that Evergreen subsidiary C-Lock™ Technology and Enterprise Information Management (EIM) are offering GreenCert™, a “Greenhouse Gas Meter” Web-based technology package that quickly, accurately and economically measures and verifies carbon emissions reduction credits that can be bought or sold on global carbon markets. GreenCert™ is built on the patented C-Lock™ algorithm invented by atmospheric scientist
We believe that we’re first to the market with this type of system that streamlines the transparent, credible measurement of greenhouse gas footprints and creation of certified carbon emissions reduction credits.
Global trade in greenhouse gas certificates is projected to expand from $30 billion to $1 trillion in the next decade. For that market to evolve and become robust, the credits that are traded must be real and verifiable, and the method used to measure them must be accurate, efficient, transparent and economical. That’s what GreenCert™ does—on a large scale and in a unique way that’s patented and scientifically reviewed.
Evergreen came upon the C-Lock™ technology when we were looking for ways to better measure our own greenhouse gas footprint. We soon realized that this technology has broader business opportunity beyond Evergreen.
The business need is clear. Public and private organizations around the world need GreenCert™ to measure their greenhouse gas footprints in a carbon-constrained economy where regulators and customers are demanding increasing accountability for greenhouse gas emissions. This cross-brand package offers a standardized, automated, high-volume approach to measure greenhouse gas footprints and carbon reduction credits. It is adaptable to changing greenhouse gas rules and regulations and as a “back end” platform offers the flexibility to work with multiple front end portals.
The patent-pending C-Lock™ process rides on a backbone of proven IBM hardware integrated by EIM and has passed rigorous scientific peer review and results in the generation of C-Lock™ Carbon Emission Credits that can be authenticated quickly by third party review.
Potential GreenCert™ customers include public and private end users that need to manage GHG risks and liabilities, especially in energy intensive sectors. Additional potential customers include: GHG offset registries, commodity exchanges, GHG offset producers, technology developers, environmental organizations, and financial institutions with interests in the creditworthiness of GHG emitters, economic development and environmentally responsible lending.
GreenCert™ represents the first use of a fully-integrated cross-brand suite of IBM software and hardware tools to meet the needs of the global greenhouse gas industry. It’s low-cost, high volume, automated and verifiable approach stands in stark contrast to the present disorganized measurement system that relies on custom or project-based approaches, where each project characteristic must be identified, evaluated and indemnified against risks before a “tradable” greenhouse gas credit can be monetized and traded.
The simple truth is that if we’re to live in a carbon constrained economy where people pay more for their energy, we’d better make darn sure that the measurement of those carbon emissions are accurate and the offsets are valid. Otherwise, public support will erode. GreenCert™ addresses that need, and with the help of IBM C-Lock’s patented process can now go global.
